Winter Tires

Enjoy excellent traction on snow and ice

All Tire Categories

Winter tires, also known as snow tires, are designed to help provide enhanced traction once the temperature drops below 45Fº/7.2Cº. If you live in a place where you’ll have to drive through harsh winter conditions regularly, winter tires might be right for you.

The Benefits

  • Traction

Winter tires offer the best of traction and grip in severe winter weather conditions. They’re built to help provide confident control in ice, slush, freezing rain, and snow.

  • Braking

Winter tires help provide enhanced braking performance in snowy and icy conditions.

  • Grip

The pliable tread compounds featured in winter tires remain soft even in frigid temperatures – which makes for a stronger grip in comparison to all-season tires.

The Technologies

When you're looking for new tires, keep an eye out for these technologies in some of Goodyear's popular Winter tires.

  • Ice Zones

A tread with numerous biting edges offering enhanced gripping traction particularly on icy and slick roads.

  • Winter Grip Tread Compound

A tread compound that offers enhanced traction on ice and snow-covered roads from season to season.

  • 2D Blades in the Center Zone

These blades offer enhanced stopping and starting power on snow and ice.

For information on these and other Goodyear technologies, view the tire glossary

You should also remember look for the Severe Snow Conditions Symbol located on the sidewall of a tire when you're shopping for winter tires. This symbol indicates a tire that meets a snow traction standard recognized by the RMA (Rubber Manufacturers Association).

Comparing Weather Conditions

Before you decide which tire type is right for you, keep these key differences in mind.

  •  All-Season
    • Designed to: face changing weather conditions like rain, sleet, slush and even light snow.
    • Consider if: you live in a place that faces a variety of weather conditions. However, if you know you’ll have to drive through snow or ice on a regular basis, you might want to consider winter tires for the colder months.
  •  Summer
    • Designed to: help provide excellent performance on both wet and dry roads.
    • Consider if: you enjoy driving with precision and live in a place where it’s warm regularly. Don’t let the name fool you though; summer tires do offer impressive wet traction. Just make sure to change to winter tires if you know you’ll have to drive through snow or ice.
  •  Winter

    • Designed to: enhance grip in even the most severe winter weather conditions including slush, snow, freezing rain and ice.
    • Consider if: you live in a place that frequently sees snow or ice. However, winter tires aren’t designed for all-seasons. They should be replaced with either summer or all-season tires once the weather warms up.
